Glimpses of Darkness – Portraits by Mike Mellia
May 5th 2013, 21:43

Mike Mellia is a commercial and fine art photographer living in New York City. He’s interested in the use of allegory in photography, and many of his fine art projects have clear moral or political messages. However, his series ‘Glimpses of Darkness’ has a slightly different atmosphere than his previous work. Inspired by Rembrandt’s portrait ‘Head of a Bald, Old Man’ (1632), he wanted to produce a set of contemporary photos imitating Rembrandt’s dramatic use of shadow and light. His collection includes staged studio shots as well as spontaneous street shots, but all reflect the same style: a spot of light in the darkness.
